If you’ve noticed in the recent series against the Minnesota Twins, Yankees
left fielder Brett Gardner has been absent from the lineup. According to reports, Gardner felt some pain in his left knee from diving for a ball Saturday against the Rockies. Since then, Gardner has not been in the lineup for the Yankees and honestly probably for the best.

Brett Gardner started this 2019 season a little off, with a BA of .143 on April
3; however, Gardner has greatly improved his performance now hitting .243 with only 4 less home runs from last year (41 in 2018 vs. 45 so far in 2019). You have to remember, Gardner is a 35-year-old veteran. With a bunch of young guys on the squad, it may be smart to have Gardner sit a little while longer to help ease that knee pain.

What certainly helps ease the Yankees having yet another player out for a
short period of time, due to another possible injury, is having outfielder Mike
Tauchman as Brett Gardner’s replacement. Tauchman has been a solid backup
outfielder for the Yankees, currently hitting .269 with 6 home runs and 23 RBI’s. This past week though, Tauchman has really showed up for the Yankees!

Tauchman has hit an RBI in seven of the nine games he’s played in July, and is
batting a .522 this month with two home runs and eight RBI’s. Entering Tuesday’s game, Tauchman was 11-for-19 (.579 BA), went 3-for-4, scored twice and drove in a run on Monday. On Tuesday he went 2-for-5, drove in a run and scored a run. “He is really playing a nice role for us right now,” said Aaron Boone.

Even though Brett Gardner has been hot with the bat lately, having Gardner
benched to fully heal with Tauchman as his replacement is the smartest thing Boone and the Yankees could have done. Tauchman has always been impressive in the outfield and is certainly on a hot streak at home plate.
