The Most Dangerous Catcher in the Game
By: JJ Vargas
“There it goes, see ya! Another home run for Gary Sanchez!” is something regularly heard this season if you’re a baseball fan. The Kraken has now broken his own franchise record for most home runs for a Yankees catcher, smacking his 34th long ball of the year versus the Texas Rangers earlier this week.
Sanchez is on pace to hit the eight 40-home run season for a catcher in MLB history. Johnny Bench, Javy Lopez, Todd Hundley, Roy Campanella and Mike Piazza are the only backstops to accomplish the feat. The Kraken has hit a home run every 11.7 at-bats this season, which compares to Mets rookie star Pete Alonso, who at this point has 45 home runs.
El Gary now joins only Yogi Berra as the only two Yankee catchers to have multiple 30-plus home run seasons for the franchise. Whenever you can put yourself in the same sentence with a Yankee legend, you know you’re doing something right. Gary Sanchez is the most dangerous catcher in the game!
