The New York Jets are by far the favorite to get the number 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft, but along with that top pick, they also have Seattle’s first-round pick from the Jamal Adams trade. In my mid-season and the first rendition of my 2021 mock draft, I have the Jets using those two picks to pick a dynamic duo that has the ability to be the strong foundation the New York Jets need to build their team around to return to relevance in the NFL. That dynamic duo is that from the Clemson Tigers in quarterback Trevor Lawrence and running back Travis Etienne.

With the first overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft, the New York Jets select, Trevor Lawrence from Clemson University. Enough of the narrative that Lawrence will weasel his way out of getting pick by the Jets. This was the face of all the college football players in the country that wanted to play through this COVID-19 pandemic, so to think that he won’t go get his money and compete for a team that is struggling is absurd. Lawrence is a leader, a great quarterback, and someone who wants to compete, regardless of what team he is on. I know the Jets have a lot of problems with coaching and in the front office which I expect they will attempt to fix during the offseason to prepare to clean the slate and start anew. The perfect quarterback to start a clean slate with and build around is Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence.

With a late first-round draft pick along with the number one overall pick, the Jets have the Seahawks pick from the preseason trade of Jamal Adams. The Jets are a complete mess right now and they do have a couple of young pieces from prior drafts that they can keep to help the rebuild. Along with the best quarterback in the draft in Trevor Lawrence, I expect the Jets to pick the best running back in this draft, also from Clemson, Travis Etienne. The Jets have struggled to find a solid consistent running back since Curtis Martin in the late ’90s and early 2000s. Etienne is the best running back in this draft class and could really help a team that needs a franchise running back like the Jets who are currently starting the 37-year-old Frank Gore. Plus, the chemistry between Lawrence and Etienne would be a solid foundation to build a solid team around.

The New York Jets’ main problems come from coaching and the front office. They have athletes currently on their roster and with a change in coaching and management along with key building pieces in Trevor Lawrence and Travis Etienne, the Jets could for the first time in a while have a promising future.
