After week 12 of the 2020 NFL season, the New York Giants find themselves in a weird spot. The Giants currently hold a 4–7 record but first place in the NFC East, which would put them around the 8th-12th overall pick range of the 2021 NFL draft. However, if the Giants win the division the lowest draft pick they can get is the 19th overall pick. With a lot of uncertainty this far into the season on where the Giants are going to pick, here are some names to keep a lookout on that could become the New York Giants’ next draft pick.

Let’s start off talking about the defensive side of the ball. The biggest need for the Giants on defense is a solid edge rusher, which presents itself as a problem because the amount and quality of edge rushers in this draft class is not that deep. The two top edge rushers in this draft class are Patrick Jones II from Pitt, who is currently second in the nation in sacks with 9, and the other is Gregory Rousseau from Miami, who opted out of the 2020 college football season but last year recorded 15.5 sacks on the season. Jones II and Rousseau are both the best edge rushers in the 2021 draft class and one of the two should be available for the Giants in the middle of the first round if the Giants do not win the NFC East. If the Giants do win the NFC East some names to look out for in the late first round on the defensive side of the ball are the edge rusher out Wake Forest, Carlos Basham Jr, and the defensive back from Virginia Tech Caleb Farley.

Now looking at the offensive side of the ball, the Giants’ real big need is the number 1 option at wide receiver, and unlike the edge rushers in this draft class, the wide receiver quality runs deep. The bell of the ball for wide receivers is LSU’s Ja’Marr Chase who will 100% be a number 1 wide receiver for whatever team he goes to, however, do not expect him to be available by the time the Giants are on the clock even if they do not win the division. But who is a reasonable get for the Giants at wide receiver? The two wide receivers behind Chase that could find their way to the Giants in the middle of the first round is DeVonta Smith from Alabama and Rashod Bateman from Minnesota who both could be excellent additions to Giants wide receiving core and both have the ability to be a number 1 wide receiver in the NFL. But if the Giants win the division and end up with a late first-round pick there are two quality wide receivers that could fill the void for the Giants however they come with some injury issues that could put them in the late first-round but could end up being steals. The two late first-round possible steals are Jaylen Waddle from Alabama and Rondale Moore from Purdue, who could both end up being solid wide receiver 1 options in the NFL but their injury history could make owners and GMs wary of picking them.

With the draft future of the New York Giants still undecided there are still a lot of options for the Giants in the 2021 draft. Along with the needs mentioned, do not be surprised if an interior offensive lineman or a defensive back ends up coming to New York. However, the two biggest needs the Giants need to fill in the 2021 NFL draft are at edge rusher and wide receiver.
