My take on the Pats bringing back Cam Newton
By Steve Risser
On Friday, the Pats resigned Cam Newton to a one year fourteen million dollar deal. This deal came as a surprise to me and I don’t agree with it, but I can see why they did it. There are 3 reasons why I can see why they did it. One is that it doesn’t rule out that they are going to draft a quarterback in the first round with the number 15 pick. There also is not much out there on the free agent market. It was either sign Ryan Fitzpatrick, Mitch Trubisky or Alex Smith or Trade for Marcus Mariota and none of those QB’s are that much of an upgrade over Cam Newton. Lastly, because of his name, the Pats might be able to attract free agents. This is a huge offseason for the Pats because they have 68 million in cap space, which is the 3rd most in the league. Even though, I understand why the Pats did this. I don’t like it and there’s 2 reasons why. One is it pretty much rules out that they’re going to trade for Jimmy Garoppolo and I thought that was the QB that could get them back to the playoffs this year. The other reason why I don’t like this, and the most important reason I don’t like this, is Cam is not a good QB anymore. Last year, Cam only threw 8 TD passes, which was the lowest for any QB that started more then 8 games last year and he had a passer rating of 82.9, which was 28th in the league. Also, in 4 of the Pats 9 losses, he had the ball in his hands with a chance to tie or win the game and he failed to do that all 4 times. With the Pats bringing Cam back, it does show that they have somewhat of a plan at the position, but this better not be the long-term solution, if they want to compete with the Bills and Dolphins in the AFC East.
