On Wednesday the running back Raheim Mostert requested a trade from the 49ers.
Mostert helped the Niners reach the Super Bowl last year and had a huge NFC title game rushing for 220 Yards that might seem that Mostert is on his way to be a stud, but history has shown us for years with Mike and Kyle Shanahan that they’ve been able to get production for a ton of no name running backs.
We Remember in the late 90’s how good the Broncos were with head coach Mike Shanahan and how productive their run game was with Terell Davis who rushed for over 1,000 yards his first 4 seasons in the league and in 1998 rushed for over 2,000 yards. What most people don’t remember thou was when Davis tore his ACL at the beginning of the 1999 season and was never the same player again the Broncos counited to have a strong running game. After Davis got hurt in 12 games running back Olandis Gary run for almost ran for 1,200 yards in 99 the trend continued in the years to come in 12 games Mike Anderson rushed of almost 1,500 Yards in 2000. The best running back the Broncos had outside of Davis in the Shanahan era Clinton Ports rushed for over 1,500 Yards in his first 2 seasons before he was traded to the Redskins for Champ Bailey he only went over 1,500 Yards once in his 7 years in Washington.
After Portis was traded Mike Anderson had another season were he rushed for over 1000 Yards in 2005 and Ruben Droughns and Tatum Bell rushed for over 1,000 Yards in 2004 and 2006.
When Kyle Shannan became offensive coordinator of the Texans in 2008 he was able to have the same success his father did Steve Slayton ran for over 1,200 Yards in 2008. When he joined his father as OC in Washington, Alfred Morris was 2nd in the league in rushing with over 1,600 Yards and rushed for over 1,200 yards in 2013.
In 2015 when he became the Falcons OC Devonta Freeman rushed for over 1,000 Yards in 2015 and 2016 and he’s not put up to close to that production since Shanahan left for the Niners in 2017.
The point is Kyle Shanahan is one of the top offense minds in the game just like his father was for many years in this league. Even thou there’s a good chance the Niners will lose Mostert but with Tevin Colman, Jeff Wilson and Jerick McKinnon coming back from injury they should still be one of the top rushing teams in the league in 2020.
