With an unforeseen delay in the 2020 MLB season due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Yankees, just like the other teams across the league, had to wait and keep their players in top form to compete for this year’s championship.
As viewers, the joy of seeing the lucky fan on TV catch a baseball was missed, after seeing outfielder Giancarlo Stanton hit two thunderous home runs against the defending champions Washington Nationals on Opening Weekend. In a shortened 60-game season, Stanton has stood out as one of the first among stars to pop with their talent and translating it into wins. He’s also impacted the game in another way out of the fan-free stadium; He and teammate Aaron Hicks continued to take a knee during the national anthem in support for the Black Lives Matter movement, with DJ LeMahieu supporting them. “We’re still in this fight. We have to keep the movement moving forward,” said Stanton.
Gleyber Torres emerged as the X-Factor in a tight Game 3 in the opening series. The Yankees trailed 3–0 before the young star hit a solo home run to avoid the shut out and start momentum for the come back, as Luke Voit added a solo shot of his own in the same inning. Torres also added an RBI single for the lead to seal the win. As displayed early in his career, the young Venezuelan continues to show promise as a future star in the league, even among a star-filled lineup that includes Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez.
Winning the opening weekend series in a memorable, unprecedented MLB season against Max Scherzer and the defending champs, the Washington Nationals, is encouraging for the New York Yankees as the rest of the season still has many questions and obstacles to come. As fans, we should feel thankful that in a world we’re all still adapting to, destiny has returned baseball back to us and it feels great to say that after nine innings of baseball, we can again say we “watched a good game.”
