Filling Voit’s Void
The injury bug continues to plague the New York Yankees as another player lands on the IL. First baseman Luke Voit will be off the field as he was diagnosed with a sports hernia, and could sidelined until September!
Yankees Manager Aaron Boone said the team will evaluate Voit over the next few days. Options include treating the injury on a day-to-day basis or having surgery, which would keep him out of the lineup for six weeks.
“Over the next 24 hours, we’ll determine a course of action” Boone said. “Hopefully it’s a shorter-term situation with Luke, but worst-case, we’ll hopefully have him back before the end of the season, and we have all the people capable of withstanding that.”
One of Voit’s swings during an at-bat in the bottom of the third in the Yankees Tuesday loss against the Diamondbacks that ended in a strikeout raised a few eyebrows in the Yankees’ dugout, as they thought something looked a little off. Voit later told Boone and the training staff that he had been having trouble getting loose all day.
You can expect to see Edwin Encarnacion play the field more often at first during the span of time. Gio Urshela is also another option as he played first base when Voit didn’t return to the game. DJ Lemahieu is hopefully set to return to action for the opener against rival Red Sox this upcoming weekend.
Voit is batting .278 with 19 homers and 54 RBIs in 94 games.
