Yankees fans across the globe celebrated when the franchise signed arguably the best starting pitcher in the MLB, Gerrit Cole. It was a Christmas gift come early and the 2020 season couldn’t come fast enough, but, as it approaches, the signing of the Ace seems even more significant that just a offseason splash.
Since the blockbuster signing (nine years, $324 million), the Yankees rotation has taken a few hits. Luis Severino has undergone Tommy John surgery and will miss the entire 2020 season. Lefty James Paxton will miss 3–4 months having had a microscopic lumbar discectomy for the removal of a peridiscal cyst. Last years breakout pitcher, Domingo German, is set to miss 81 games due to his Domestic Violence suspension and was recently involved in an automotive accident in the Dominican Republic, but is reported to be uninjured.
As for the rotation, Gerrit Cole is set to be the number one starter, followed up by veterans Masahiro Tanaka and J.A. Happ, leaving the fourth and fifth slot an open competition. Jordan Montgomery seems to be a promising option if he comes back healthy, as he’s coming off Tommy John surgery. Jonathan Loaisiga, Luis Cessa and young gun Deivi Garcia will all get a shot for the fifth spot.
With uncertainty in the rotation going into the new season, the move to acquire Gerrit Cole has far more significance than it did days after he was signed. Almost out of a story book, the lifetime Yankees fan Cole will get a chance to pitch at the highest level in The Bronx, with his talent being the reason this team gets closer to their 28th championship.
