Chris Jones is clearly the best player on the Chiefs defense
By Steve Risser
Today the Chiefs extended Defensive Tackle Chris Jones to a 4-year $84-million-dollar extension. In 4 years with the Chiefs, Jones has 33 sacks and had a career high 15 in 2018, when he earned 2nd year All Pro honors and was selected to the Pro Bowl last year.
With the Chiefs locking up their best player on offense last week, giving Mahomes a huge ten-year extension, and today locking up their best defensive player, they’re now in great shape to defend their title in 2020.
Many people might think that Tyrann Mathieu is the best player on the Chiefs defense because he is the bigger name, but that is definitely not the case. Jones is an interior defender and plays a more important position then Mathieu does, as a safety. Jones is a top 3 defensive tackle along with Fletcher Cox and the great Aaron Donald.
The Chiefs lost 4 games last year, in 2 of those losses, to the Texans and Packers, Jones was out with a groin injury, and in the game where he suffered that injury, the Chiefs lost to the Colts.
In the Super Bowl, Jones was the 2nd best player on the field for the Chiefs. He had the pressure that forced Jimmy Garoppolo to throw his first interception that lead to 3 points, and he also batted 3 balls down at the line of scrimmage. All 3 of them being on the Niners final drives of the game.
In the last 2 weeks the Chiefs have made themselves the team to beat in the league for the next decade, locking up their best offensive and defensive players.
