On Thursday, Ben Roethlisberger agreed to restructure his contract with the Steelers. This is something he needed to do if he wanted to remain the Steelers QB in 2021. There’s 2 reasons why this is exactly what he needed to do. One is that the Steelers needed to free up cap space. Going into 2021, Big Ben’s cap hit was at 41 million and now that they have restructured his cap to 26 million, which will free up 15 million in cap space. This now leads me to my second reason because Big Ben is not the QB he once was at 39 years old. He is going to need pieces around him if the Steelers want to be Super Bowl contenders. Freeing up cap space means that they will have a better chance of signing free agents like Ju Ju Smith-Shuster, Bud Dupree, and Alejandro Villanueva. Lastly, in my opinion, the Steelers are not a Super Bowl contender with Ben as their QB, but with what he did yesterday, he gives them a better chance to be.
