One of last season’s brightest surprises in an injury-plagued year for the Yankees, was the emergence of Gleyber Torres. The 23 year old had possibly one of baseball’s best sophomore seasons in recent memory. Now officially on everyone’s radar, the Venezuelan star has a chance to become one of Major League Baseball’s elite players.

The 2020 campaign will be very different from last season. With Didi Gregorius signing with the Philadelphia Phillies, Torres will be moving to shortstop, his natural position, and stepping into the shoes of Yankees legend Derek Jeter. While it is still early in spring training, Torres has already committed five errors in ten games.

“Poor first-step reaction”, a scout in the seats texted The Post after the ball went in and out of Torres’ glove. Also, eleven of his twenty errors were made at shortstop last year, meaning he needs to continue to work on his infield play if he’s to take full responsibility at shortstop confidently.

Gleyber hit a career high 38 home runs in 2019, 13 alone against the Baltimore Orioles, making him a premiere young power hitter in the league. Also, his numbers increased in clutch situations, including two-strike counts and runners-in-scoring position. An All-Star selection once again season, he’s now recognized as one of the young rising stars in the majors.
